Run-DMC's official video. Video from YouTube. I'm not affiliated with the artist. I just love this song.
The moment hip hop busted through the wall, literally. Adidas with no laces, black hats and gold chains. Rap and rock in one room, and the whole country heard it. It was one of the first rap songs to hit the top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100.
The story behind the song
"Walk This Way" started out as an Aerosmith rock song back in 1975. Run-DMC used to rap over the beginning of that record, the drum part, without really knowing much about the band.
Their producer, Rick Rubin, had an idea: make a whole new version with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry right there on it. Not everybody was sold on it at first, but they went in the studio and did it.
The video told the whole story. Two bands on opposite sides of a wall, until Steven Tyler busts right through it. The song went to number 4 on the pop chart in 1986, helped put hip hop on MTV and on pop radio, and gave Aerosmith's career a second life.
