Luther's official video. Video from YouTube. I'm not affiliated with the artist. I just love this song.

Luther's first solo hit, and it still makes the whole cookout get up. Smooth, happy and that voice. Ain't nobody like Luther.

The story behind the song

By the time most people heard Luther's name, he had already been singing for years. He was a session singer in New York, the voice in the background on records by big-name artists.

In 1981, Epic Records gave him the chance to do his own thing. Luther wrote "Never Too Much," produced it himself and sang every word. It was the first single from his first solo album, and it went straight to number one on the R&B chart.

The album earned him two Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. From there, Luther became the voice of love songs for a whole generation. Weddings, anniversaries and cookouts haven't been the same since.
