Whitney's official video. Video from YouTube. I'm not affiliated with the artist. I just love this song.

You can't play this one sitting down. Whitney's voice, that big hair and pure joy. Weddings, birthdays, Saturday morning cleaning. This song was there for all of it.

The story behind the song

By 1987, Whitney was already a star from her first album. Everybody was waiting to see what she'd do next. "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" was the first single from her second album, Whitney, and it was a different side of her: fun, upbeat and made for dancing.

The song was written by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, a husband and wife songwriting team. It went to number one on the pop chart, and it won Whitney a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

The album made history too. Whitney was the first album by a woman to debut at number one on the Billboard album chart. Decades later, the song's title became the name of the movie about her life.
