New Edition's official video. Video from YouTube. I'm not affiliated with the artist. I just love this song.

Five kids from Boston, barely teenagers, and they took over the radio. Bobby, Ricky, Mike, Ralph and Ronnie.

The story behind the song

New Edition came out of the Orchard Park projects in Roxbury, a neighborhood in Boston. In 1982 they entered a talent show at Boston's Strand Theatre and came in second place. Producer Maurice Starr was in the audience, liked what he saw, and had them in his studio the very next day.

Starr pictured them as the '80s answer to the Jackson 5, with Ralph Tresvant out front because his high voice reminded people of a young Michael. "Candy Girl" came out in 1983, went to number one on the R&B chart and even hit number one in England.

But here's the part a lot of people don't know. After their first big tour, each member got a check for $1.87. That's not a typo. They were told it all went to tour budget and expenses. That's a big reason they split from Starr in 1984, and he went on to put together New Kids on the Block.
