This version runs through two of their performances. Video from YouTube. I'm not affiliated with the artist. I just love this song.

Produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis before they became legends. That deep, slow groove made you lean back and nod your head real cool. Def.

The story behind the song

This song changed two careers at once. The S.O.S. Band, a group out of Atlanta with Mary Davis singing lead, needed a new sound. Record man Clarence Avant paired them with two young musicians from Minneapolis named Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

At the time, Jam and Lewis were still playing in The Time, Prince's band. Prince didn't like his band members working outside the group, and when the story got out, he fired them.

It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to them. "Just Be Good to Me" came out in 1983 and went to number 2 on the R&B chart. It was their first hit as producers, and over the years they went on to make more than 40 top 10 hits for artists like Janet Jackson, Alexander O'Neal and Cheryl Lynn.
