I lost half my 401k in a divorce. One day I was counting down to retirement, and the next I was staring at a balance cut in half, wondering how I'd ever catch up. If you're over 50 and starting over financially, this post and the video above are for you: what happened, how it felt, and the steps I took to rebuild.

Quick facts

  • Divorce after 50 is more common than people think. For every 1,000 married people ages 50 and older, 10 divorced in 2015, up from 5 in 1990 (Pew Research Center).
  • A 401k is usually split with a court order called a QDRO (Qualified Domestic Relations Order), which tells the plan how to pay the former spouse's share (IRS).
  • Starting over after 50 isn't the end. It's a new starting line.
  • A paycheck alone may not be enough to catch up. For me, that's why I built an income I control.

What it feels like to lose half your retirement

There's no easy way to say it: it's a gut punch. You did the work. You put the money away. You had a number in your head and a plan for getting there. Then a signature on a court paper takes half of it, and the plan is gone.

In the video I talk about the moment it really hit me (around 1:45). If you're in that moment right now, I want you to hear this first: what you're feeling is normal, and it's not the end of your story.

How is a 401k divided in a divorce?

In many divorces, retirement savings are treated as marital property, and a 401k is commonly split using a QDRO, a court order that tells the retirement plan how much goes to a spouse or former spouse. According to the IRS, a former spouse who receives a share under a QDRO reports it as if they were the plan participant, and may be able to roll it over.

Every divorce, state and plan is different. If you're going through this now, talk to a family law attorney and a qualified financial professional before you sign anything. I'm not either one; I'm just a guy who's been through it.

Starting over after 50

After nearly 30 years in logistics and UPS management, I knew one thing for sure: a paycheck alone wasn't going to get me back on track. Waiting for retirement to fix itself wasn't a plan.

So I did two things:

  1. I stopped looking back at the old number. The money that was gone was gone. My energy had to go into what I could build from here.
  2. I started building income I control. I've been doing affiliate marketing since 2012, so I leaned into it: sharing products and programs I actually use, and earning a commission when someone buys through my link.

I explain why I didn't wait on retirement around 5:15 in the video, and how I started rebuilding income online at 7:00.

Rebuilding savings a little at a time

When your savings take a hit like that, it's easy to think "what's the point of saving $5?" But small, steady habits are how you rebuild. One tool I like for that is Acorns, an app that helps you invest small amounts automatically, like rounding up spare change from everyday purchases. It won't replace what you lost overnight, but it gets you back in the habit of putting something away, every week, without thinking about it. Check Acorns' current fees and plans on their site before you sign up.

This is not financial or investment advice. Investing involves risk, including loss of money.

Affiliate marketing for beginners, explained simply

Affiliate marketing means you recommend a product or service with your own special link, and if someone buys through it, the company pays you a commission. You don't make the product, ship anything or handle customer service. You share, honestly, what you use.

To be straight with you: it takes time, it's not guaranteed, and many beginners earn little or nothing at first. But it's one of the few ways to start with little money and no experience, and build something that belongs to you. If you're new, start with my beginner's guide to affiliate marketing over 50.

Simple first steps you can take today

Here's what I'd tell anyone starting over after a financial setback (I go through these at 11:15 in the video):

  1. Write down where you are now. Not where you were. Your real number today, and your monthly bills.
  2. Find your gap. How much more a month would make you comfortable? I walk you through it in how much money would you need to live comfortably.
  3. Start saving something, even small. Automatic is best, so you don't have to think about it.
  4. Pick one way to build extra income. Just one, and give it a few months of steady effort.
  5. Protect your main paycheck. Build your side income on your own time. Here's why: side hustle on the clock.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to a 401k in a divorce?

In many divorces, money saved in a 401k during the marriage is treated as marital property and can be divided. It's commonly split using a court order called a QDRO, which tells the plan how much to pay the former spouse. Rules differ by state and plan, so talk to a family law attorney.

Is it too late to rebuild retirement savings after 50?

No. You may have fewer years to save, but steady saving, keeping your main income safe, and adding a second income stream can still make a real difference. Start with where you are today, not where you used to be.

How common is divorce after 50?

More common than it used to be. Pew Research Center found that for every 1,000 married people ages 50 and older, 10 divorced in 2015, compared with 5 in 1990. It's often called "gray divorce."

Can affiliate marketing replace lost retirement savings?

It can help, but there are no guarantees. Many beginners earn little or nothing at first. Think of it as one way to build extra income over time, alongside saving and protecting your main paycheck.

Where can I start learning affiliate marketing for free?

You can start with my free beginner training at gobeaug.com and the beginner guides on this blog.

It's never too late to rebuild

Losing half my 401k didn't end my story, and it doesn't have to end yours. Start where you are. Save what you can. Build something you control. Let's go get paid.

If you've been through something like this, I'd love to hear how you're rebuilding. Share it in the comments; someone reading might need your story today.

Results vary. Your results depend on your own effort, skills and situation, and many people earn nothing.
