How to Prep Your Hair Before a Salon Appointment
How to prep your hair before a salon appointment: come detangled, skip heavy products, bring photos and share your hair history for a better result.
Kiana Monroe
To prep your hair before a salon appointment, come with clean, detangled hair unless your stylist says otherwise, skip heavy products, bring photos of the look you want, and share your hair history. A little prep before your salon appointment saves time, protects your hair and helps you leave with the style you pictured.

Why prep matters
When you sit in my chair, I want to spend our time on your style, not on fighting buildup or tangles. Good prep also helps me see the real condition of your hair so I can protect it. And it means you're more likely to walk out happy, right on time.
Before you come in
Check what your appointment needs
Every service is different. For a silk press, I usually want to wash your hair myself, so you can come in as is. For braids, many stylists ask you to come with your hair already washed, blow-dried and detangled. When in doubt, ask when you book.
Come detangled
If your service starts with dry hair, gently detangle it the night before. Tangled hair takes longer and causes more breakage.
Skip heavy products
Don't load your hair with gel, heavy butters or oils the day before. Product buildup can get in the way of a smooth press and can make braids slip.
Bring photos
Pictures help us agree on the look. Bring a few photos of styles you love and, if you can, one of a style you don't want.
Share your hair history
Tell me about color, relaxers, keratin treatments, heat damage, sensitive scalp spots, or any recent hair loss. This helps me pick the right products and the right amount of heat and tension.
What to bring
- Your inspiration photos
- Any hair you were asked to buy for braids
- A satin scarf or bonnet for the ride home
- Snacks and a phone charger for long services like braids
During your appointment
Speak up. If the water is too hot, the heat feels like too much, or a braid feels too tight, tell me. A good stylist wants you comfortable. Ask questions about how to care for your style at home, too.
After your appointment
Ask how long your style should last and what products to use. Then follow the care tips, like wrapping your silk press or moisturizing under your braids, so your style lasts until your next visit.
Should you book a consultation first?
If you are trying a big change, like going from relaxed hair to natural, getting your first silk press, or trying a new kind of braids, a short consultation is worth it. We can look at your hair together, talk about what it can handle, and plan the right service and timing. It also gives you a chance to ask about price and how long the appointment will take, so there are no surprises on the day. Many of my clients start with a consultation and leave with a plan for healthier hair over the next few months.
Frequently asked questions
Should I wash my hair before my appointment?
It depends on the service. For many silk presses the stylist washes it, and for braids you may be asked to come washed and blow-dried. Ask when you book.
Is it rude to bring photos?
Not at all. Photos are the best way to show the look you want, and most stylists love them.
How early should I arrive?
Arrive about five to ten minutes early so you can settle in and talk about your look without cutting into your service time.
What if I'm not happy with my style?
Say so kindly while you're still in the chair. Small changes are much easier to make right then than days later.
